Luminous Technologies’ Optically Active Additive is an additive, not a paint. It is typically added to paint in a very low concentration, (normally between 1 & 2%), and is incorporated, by the paint manufacturer, at the time of production.
Optically activated paint is suitable for use as a primer on any metal or concrete structure at risk of industrial corrosion. Having applied the primer, all that is required of the user is to shine a U.V. lamp on the newly painted surface; it is not necessary to dim the lights. The U.V. lamp will instantly illuminate the painted portion, leaving dull and immediately obvious any area where the coating is patchy or insufficient. These areas can then be attended to at speed and in isolation.
A second coat of paint, without the OAA, can then be applied and the same U.V. technique used to check the integrity of coverage; the OAA in the primer coat will shine through any inconsistencies in the second coat. When the U.V. light is not present the paint will appear normal.
The Benefits:
- Current estimates show that approximately 14% of the time taken to coat a water ballast tank is given over to inspection. The use of an optically activated paint can reduce this time by up to half.
- The correct use of an optically active paint guarantees 100% defect-free coverage and the best possible protection against industrial corrosion. A structure, treated in this way will endure against the elements significantly longer than a structure suffering from areas of inadequate coating.
